Tiina was born and raised in Helsinki, Finland, but she is currently living and working mostly in Sweden. Her voice has been described as light, shimmery, silvery, beautiful and baring, and her repertoire is a blend of soubrette/ light lyric/ coloratura. Tiina Markkanen has studied in Helsinki, Vienna and lastly Malmö, from where she graduated as Master of Music in in Performance, in 2015. Since then Tiina has appeared in various projects, such as Venus and Adonis (as Venus) at Glogerfestspillene festival in Kongsberg, and at the Barokk festival in Trondheim, Norway, The Queen of the sea and her son (as Queen of the sea/ in Finnish Merenkuningatar ja hänen poikansa), a contemporary independent production in Helsinki and Hyvinkää, Finland, The Merry Widow (partly rewritten version by Rickard Söderberg/Kammaropera syd) as countess Olga, in Ystad, Sweden, as Suffragette Stina Quint in the operetta Teaterhotellet (in Ystad by Kammaropera Syd and Rickard Söderberg), and La Traviata (as Annina), with Folkoperan and Jönköping sinfonietta, Jönköping, Sweden. Tiina is currently working at the Göteborg opera in Sweden, as well as with some smaller-scale independent productions and concerts. More of these to be announced on the front page of this site.
Tiina has performed a variety of contemporary music and collaborated with several composers, such as Paavo Korpijaakko, Juan Antonio Muro, Jonatan Sersam, Alfred Jimenez and David Riebe. Also projects combining several art-forms have always intrigued Tiina, and she has collaborated with photographers, video artists, actors, sound engineers and illustrators.
Tiina is a member of the acclaimed vocal group Palaestra in Lund, Sweden, lead by Cecilia Martin-Löv. The group performs mostly in concerts, and in 2015-2016 created a circus-opera performance, in which Tiina was a soloist and part of the ensemble.
As orchestra soloist Tiina has among others performed the soprano parts in Bachs Christmas oratorio, Mozarts Requiem and Mahlers 4th symphony.
